MA in Theatre Education at Metropolitan College prepares theatre and education professionals to design, organise, and facilitate acting classes, theatre workshops, and educational programmes for adults, adolescents, and children.

The postgraduate programme, delivered by Metropolitan College in collaboration with Queen Margaret University, combines contemporary approaches to theatre pedagogy, applied theatre, and creative learning with extensive practical experience in the design and delivery of workshops and participatory projects.

In particular, students develop practical expertise in teaching acting, designing courses and training programmes, managing groups, facilitating creative processes, and applying theatre-based methods across educational, cultural, and community settings. At the same time, it encourages students to critically evaluate and develop their own professional practice through reflective enquiry and practice research, where creative and artistic work becomes a mode of investigation and knowledge generation.

Graduates are equipped to work in drama schools, acting studios, cultural organisations, educational institutions, community programmes, and a wide range of environments where theatre is used as a tool for artistic development, learning, and social engagement.

Theatre today extends far beyond the stage. It is increasingly used in education, adult learning, creative skills development, community engagement, and personal growth. At the same time, more theatre professionals are creating and leading their own workshops, training programmes, and educational initiatives.

Through the MA Theatre Education, students learn how to create meaningful, creative, and supportive learning environments. Particular emphasis is placed on collaboration, communication, group dynamics, and understanding how challenging life experiences and trauma may influence participation and learning. Students develop practical strategies for creating safe, inclusive, and supportive environments in which participants can express themselves, create, and collaborate with confidence.

Alongside these pedagogical skills, students gain practical experience in professional planning and project development, including the design and evaluation of educational programmes, entrepreneurial and professional planning, and the organisation of artistic and educational initiatives.
