The event took place at the Metropolitan College Athens Downtown campus, under the auspices of the joint NAUSS-IOM Center for Technical Cooperation on Border and Migration Management, launched in Riyadh, in 2022.
The 3-day workshop focused on developing a comprehensive strategy for legal identification that would enable state authorities to better manage migration, meet security and humanitarian requirements at borders, and provide protection and assistance to people in need. In recent years, a notable increase in irregular migration has been observed between the Arab region and Southern European countries, with Greece being one of the most common destinations.
On the third day of the workshop, participants visited Athens International Airport, where, with the support of the Hellenic Police and airport management, they participated in an observation visit that included border security practices and technologies, in line with global standards.
The exchange of knowledge during the workshop facilitated a shared understanding of the legal and technical terms, related to document security and fraud detection, helping to establish best practices for document security, forgery and fraud detection, and the required expertise to improve border management, according to the worldwide standards.
Along with representatives from the land, air, and sea border authorities contributing to border and migration management, the attendees list included subject experts and decision-makers from all across the Arab region and Southeastern Mediterranean, specializing in legal identity management, border management education and training.
Participants explored the latest technological developments, such as artificial intelligence methods in document security and the careful application of biometric technology. They also examined the human rights supporting identity documentation, privacy protection, and the ethical use of document security methods.
